Shift alarm not ringing on Android? 5 settings to check
If your shift app's alarm doesn't ring, or the missed alarms only go off once you open the app, the cause is usually a phone setting rather than the app. Android puts apps to sleep to save battery, and it asks for separate permission for on-time alarms and for alarms over the lock screen. Checking these five things fixes most cases.
5 reasons a shift alarm doesn't ring
Here's each cause with its symptom and where to fix it. Menu names vary a little by phone maker and Android version.
| Cause | Symptom | Where to fix it |
|---|---|---|
| Notifications off | Nothing happens at alarm time | Settings → Apps → the app → Notifications on (Android 13+ also asks for notification permission) |
| Exact alarms not allowed | The alarm rings minutes late | Settings → Apps → Special app access → Alarms & reminders (Android 12+) |
| Full-screen alarms not allowed | No alarm screen on the lock screen, just a quiet notification | Settings → Apps → Special app access → Full-screen notifications (Android 14+) |
| Battery optimization | Alarms stop after you haven't opened the app for a few days | Settings → Apps → the app → Battery → Unrestricted |
| App put to sleep or force-stopped | Missed alarms all ring at once when you open the app | Remove the app from 'sleeping apps' lists in device care, and don't force-stop it |
Check them in this order
You only need to do this once, when you first set up your alarms.
- Notifications: make sure the app's notifications and its alarm channel are on
- Exact alarms: allow 'Alarms & reminders'
- Full-screen notifications: let the app show the alarm over the lock screen
- Battery: set the app's battery use to Unrestricted and keep it off any sleeping-apps list
- Don't force-stop: Force stop in Settings can clear scheduled alarms, so open the app again to set them back
Why shift alarms get missed more often
A regular alarm rings at the same time every day. A shift alarm changes with your shift and has to stay quiet on days off, so the app works out your next shift and schedules the alarm ahead. If that scheduled alarm is cleared by battery optimization or a restart, it simply doesn't ring that day.
How Rotaday's per-shift alarm works
Rotaday gives each shift its own wake-up time, for example 05:40 for day shift and 16:30 for night shift. It uses Android's exact alarm clock, so it rings on time even after a restart, and it keeps ringing over the lock screen until you turn it off or snooze. There's no alarm on days off and no ads on the alarm screen.
The Alarms tab checks whether notifications are on and whether exact and full-screen alarms are allowed. If anything could stop alarms from ringing, it tells you and takes you to the setting to fix it, and the change shows up as soon as you come back.
