How to set up a rotating shift pattern in a minute

Setting up a shift calendar feels hard when you try to find your employer's roster in a list. Any rotation is really just two things: the order that repeats, and the day that order starts. Write the order as blocks, pick the day you work the first block, and years of calendar fill themselves in.

The key: the day you work the first block

Say your rotation is an 8-day cycle of Day · Day · Night · Night · Off · Off · Off · Off. Once you pick a day you worked that first Day block, every date after it can be worked out. You don't need to figure out where today falls in the cycle — just pick the most recent day you started the rotation from the top.

Teams on the same rotation usually differ only in their start date. That's why you can match your exact roster without a company list.

Common rotations, written as blocks

These are typical examples. Your workplace may use a different order or length, so compare with your own roster and adjust the blocks.

Set it up in a minute

  • Write down one full cycle of your roster (for example Day, Day, Night, Night, Off, Off, Off, Off)
  • Pick the closest preset, or tap blocks to build the exact order
  • Choose the day you work the first block
  • Check that the preview of today and tomorrow matches reality, then save

Set it up in Rotaday

Rotaday has presets for 2 days · 2 nights · 4 off, day · evening · night, weekly day/night, every other day, 24h on · rest · off and Mon–Fri, or you can build your own pattern block by block. Choose the day you work the first block and you'll see today and tomorrow right away — no company list, no emailing your roster to anyone.

Day, evening, night, off, rest, leave, training and 24h are color-coded, and you can change their names, short labels, colors and hours to match your workplace. Then give each shift its own wake-up alarm.
