How much money do you make on a coffee break?
You're still getting paid while you make coffee, go to the restroom or check your phone on the clock. Once you know what a minute is worth, you can work out exactly what your company paid you for that break. Call it paid to slack (or paid to poop).
The formula: per-minute pay × minutes away
Per-minute pay = monthly pay ÷ hours worked that month ÷ 60. At $60,000 a year ($5,000 a month), 8 hours × 22 workdays is 176 hours: about $28.41 an hour, or $0.4735 a minute.
On hourly pay it's just your wage ÷ 60. At $20 an hour, a minute is $0.33 and a 15-minute coffee break is $5.
What each break pays
$60,000 a year, month with 22 workdays (about $0.4735 a minute). Rounded.
| Break | Time | Earned |
|---|---|---|
| ☕ Coffee | 15 min | $7.10 |
| 🚻 Restroom | 5 min | $2.37 |
| 📱 Phone | 10 min | $4.73 |
| 🚶 Walk | 20 min | $9.47 |
Thirty minutes a day over 22 workdays is 11 hours a month, about $312.50. Over a year that's about $3,750. Just for fun, and only an estimate.
