How much do I earn per second? Salary per second, worked out
Your salary per second is your monthly pay divided by the seconds you actually work that month. The same salary gives a different per-second number depending on how many workdays the month has, whether your lunch break is unpaid, and whether you count 24/7. Here is the formula with worked examples.
The formula: monthly pay ÷ seconds worked
For a yearly salary, divide by 12 to get monthly pay. Then divide by the month's workdays × hours per day (minus unpaid breaks) × 3,600. That's what each working second is worth.
Example: 9:00 to 18:00 with a one-hour unpaid lunch is 8 hours a day. A month with 22 workdays is 176 hours, or 633,600 seconds.
Hourly pay is simpler: hourly wage ÷ 3,600. Daily pay is the day rate ÷ that day's working seconds.
Earnings per second by pay
Based on an 8-hour day, breaks excluded. Rounded.
| Pay | Per hour | Per minute | Per second |
|---|---|---|---|
| $20 an hour | $20.00 | $0.333 | $0.0056 |
| $200 a day (8 hours) | $25.00 | $0.417 | $0.0069 |
| $60,000 a year, month with 22 workdays | $28.41 | $0.473 | $0.0079 |
| $60,000 a year, month with 20 workdays | $31.25 | $0.521 | $0.0087 |
| $60,000 a year, counted 24/7 (30-day month) | $6.94 | $0.116 | $0.0019 |
At $60,000 a year ($5,000 a month), counting only working hours, you earn about 0.8 cents every second, or about $227 in an 8-hour day. In a month with fewer workdays, the same pay is spread over fewer hours, so each second is worth a little more.
Working hours only vs 24/7
Working-hours mode only adds money while you work. It pauses for lunch, after clock-out and on weekends, so each working second is worth more.
24/7 mode spreads your monthly pay over every second of the month. The number keeps climbing while you sleep, but each second is worth less. Both add up to the same monthly total.

FAQ
- I'm on a monthly salary. Why does my per-second rate change each month?
- Your monthly pay is divided by that month's working hours. Months with more workdays have a slightly lower per-second rate and months with fewer have a higher one. The monthly total stays the same.
- Can I see it after tax?
- Set your own take-home percentage in Coindle to see take-home amounts. It doesn't use tax tables, so treat the numbers as estimates.
- Does my lunch break count?
- In working-hours mode, the unpaid break is paused. In 24/7 mode, it keeps counting.
