How to count your pay on rotating shifts and night shifts
Night shifts break most pay counters the moment the date changes. Rotating shifts follow an order, not the days of the week, so a weekday timetable can't describe them. Enter the shift that runs past midnight and your rotation as they really are, and today's pay comes out right.
One night shift, hour by hour
Example: $22 an hour, 22:00 to 06:00, with an unpaid break from 02:00 to 02:30. That's 7.5 paid hours.
| Time | Status | Earned so far |
|---|---|---|
| 23:00 | Working | $22 |
| 00:00 | Working (past midnight) | $44 |
| 02:00 | Break starts | $88 |
| 02:30 | Break ends (paused) | $88 |
| 04:00 | Working | $121 |
| 06:00 | Clock-out | $165 |
The count has to carry on past midnight to reach $165, not reset to zero. Work one more hour after clock-out as ×1.5 overtime and you add $33, for $198.
Enter rotating shifts as an order
Say your rotation is day, day, night, night, off, off: a 6-day cycle that repeats no matter the weekday. Give each shift its start and end time. Off days add nothing, and night shifts count past midnight until clock-out.
On a monthly salary, your pay is divided by the hours actually on that month's schedule. A month with more shifts has a slightly lower hourly value and a month with fewer has a higher one. The monthly total stays the same.

FAQ
- My shift ends after midnight. Does that work?
- Yes. Enter it as, say, 22:00–06:00 and Coindle keeps counting past midnight until clock-out. A break in the small hours is taken out of that same shift.
- Does it add a night premium automatically?
- No automatic premium is added to scheduled hours. Extra time outside your schedule can be added as overtime with the multiplier you choose. Check your contract and payslip for your actual rates.
- I work a lot of overtime. Will it double count?
- No. Overtime is counted only outside your schedule, so regular hours are never paid twice.
