How to split a bill with tip fairly

To split a bill evenly with tip, use: each person pays = bill × (1 + tip % ÷ 100) ÷ number of people. For example, an $84 bill with an 18% tip comes to $99.12, which is $24.78 each for 4 people. The same three steps work whether you tip 15%, 18% or 20%.

Three steps

  • Tip = bill × tip % ÷ 100. Example: $84 × 18% = $15.12
  • Total = bill + tip. Example: $84 + $15.12 = $99.12
  • Each pays = total ÷ people. Example: $99.12 ÷ 4 = $24.78

Worked examples

Set the tip to 0% when you're only splitting the bill.

$100.0015%3≈ $38.33
$60.0020%2$36.00
$150.000%6$25.00

Keeping it fair

Leftover cents: $115 split 3 ways is $38.333… If everyone pays $38.34 you collect 2¢ extra; if two people pay $38.33 and one pays $38.34, it comes out exact.

Tip before or after tax: in the US, many people tip on the pre-tax subtotal. With an $80 subtotal and $7 tax, a 20% tip is $16 on the subtotal but $17.40 on the total.

Uneven orders: when people ordered very different amounts, split in proportion to what each ordered. If A ordered $40, B $25 and C $15 (an $80 subtotal) and tax and tip bring the total to $101.40, multiply each order by 101.40 ÷ 80 = 1.2675: A pays $50.70, B $31.69 and C $19.01.
