Protein overload in hair: signs and how to fix it

Protein overload happens when reconstruction treatments or protein-heavy products are used too often and hair turns stiff and dry. Protein strengthens damaged hair, but without enough moisture to balance it, hair becomes more likely to snap.

Signs of protein overload

  • Dry hair feels stiff and rough, like straw.
  • A wet strand barely stretches and snaps.
  • Curls lose their shape or will not clump.
  • Conditioner no longer makes it feel soft.

Overload vs deficiency

Protein-deficient hair does the opposite: it stretches like gum when wet and feels limp. Stiff and snapping means too much protein; mushy and over-stretchy means too little.

How to fix it

  • Pause reconstruction treatments and protein products for 2 to 3 weeks.
  • Do a hydration treatment on every wash day.
  • Add a nutrition (oil) step to seal the ends if needed.
  • Once softness returns, bring reconstruction back about once or twice a month.

Keep reconstruction spaced out with Tressly

Tressly is an Android hair care schedule app that never places reconstruction back to back and sets its share from your hair quiz. Retake the quiz every 4 weeks and the balance follows how your hair is now.
