Hydration vs nutrition vs reconstruction: what your hair needs
The three steps of a hair care schedule each replace something different. Hydration replaces water, nutrition replaces oils and lipids, and reconstruction replaces protein. How your hair feels usually tells you which one is missing right now.
The three steps compared
| Step | Adds | Signs you need it | Typical ingredients |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hydration | Water | Dry, frizzy, stiff hair | Aloe, glycerin, panthenol |
| Nutrition | Oils and lipids | Dull hair, split ends, static | Plant oils, butters, ceramides |
| Reconstruction | Protein (keratin) | Limp, breaks easily, stretches like gum when wet | Keratin, hydrolyzed protein, amino acids |
A quick strand test
- Gently stretch one wet strand. If it stretches a lot and does not bounce back, it needs reconstruction.
- If it barely stretches and snaps, it needs hydration.
- If dry hair feels rough and frizzy, start with hydration; if it is dull with split ends, start with nutrition.
How often to do each
Most routines use hydration most often, nutrition in between and reconstruction least. Bleached, colored or heat-styled hair needs more reconstruction; dry or curly hair needs more hydration. Too much reconstruction can leave hair stiff and brittle.
Let Tressly balance it
Tressly is an Android app that asks 9 questions about curl type, treatments, heat use and how your hair feels, then balances the three steps into a 4-week schedule on the days you already wash.
