Mewing vs face yoga vs jaw exercises: what's the difference?

Mewing is a tongue-posture habit — resting the whole tongue on the roof of the mouth throughout the day. Face yoga is a short routine of movements and stretches for the face and neck muscles, and jaw exercises are a subset focused on the chin, jaw and neck. None has strong scientific evidence for reshaping the face; they are best seen as posture and gentle-exercise habits.

What is mewing?

Mewing means keeping your tongue pressed flat against the roof of your mouth, lips closed and teeth lightly touching or slightly apart, as a resting posture. It became popular online with claims about sharper jawlines, but those claims are not backed by solid research in adults.

What is face yoga?

Face yoga is a set of deliberate movements, holds and stretches for areas like the jawline, cheeks, eyes, forehead and neck, usually done in a short session. A few small studies exist; people often enjoy it for relaxation and as a daily self-care routine.

Can you combine them?

Yes — some face yoga routines include a tongue-press move that resembles mewing, and good upright posture helps all of them. Keep everything gentle: none of these should hurt, and forcing the jaw can aggravate TMJ problems. If you want changes to your bite or jaw structure, that is a question for a dentist or orthodontist, not an app.

With Mewly

Mewly is a face yoga app: 18 moves across jawline, double chin, cheeks, eyes, forehead and neck, with a new 6-move mix each day, a timer ring and an offline voice guide. It's a 5-minute wellness routine, not a mewing trainer or medical treatment — no sign-up, no subscription, no camera.

Important

This guide is general information, not medical advice. Research on face yoga is still limited, and results vary from person to person.

Keep every move gentle and pain-free. Stop right away if you feel jaw pain, clicking or popping in the jaw joint (TMJ), headaches or facial pain, and consult a doctor, dentist or other professional. If you have a TMJ disorder or recent facial procedures or surgery, check with a professional before starting.
