How to prepare for the hazmat endorsement test
To haul placarded hazardous materials you need the hazmat (H) endorsement on your CDL. Passing the knowledge test is not enough: you also need a TSA security threat assessment, which includes fingerprints and a background check, and first-time applicants must complete ELDT theory training.
Steps in order
- Complete hazmat ELDT theory training with a registered provider (first-time applicants)
- Apply for the TSA security threat assessment and get fingerprinted
- Take the hazmat knowledge test at your state DMV (80% to pass)
What the test focuses on
- Hazard classes 1 to 9 and placards
- Shipping papers and emergency response information
- Loading and segregation rules
- What the driver must do after a crash or leak
Check before you go
Fees, processing time and whether you must retest at renewal depend on your state and can change. Check your state DMV and TSA before you apply.
