CDL permit (CLP) test: how many questions and the 80% passing score
To get a commercial driver's license you first pass the written knowledge tests and receive a commercial learner's permit (CLP). Federal rules (49 CFR 383.135) require a score of at least 80% on each knowledge test. The number of questions can vary by state.
How the test is structured
Every applicant takes the General Knowledge test. Federal rules require it to have at least 30 questions, and many states use around 50. Depending on your vehicle and endorsements you also take tests such as Air Brakes, Combination Vehicles, Hazmat, Tanker, Doubles/Triples, Passenger and School Bus.
| Item | Rule |
|---|---|
| Passing score | At least 80% on each test (federal) |
| General Knowledge questions | At least 30; varies by state |
| Endorsement questions | Varies by state; check your manual |
After you get your CLP
Under federal rules you must hold the CLP for at least 14 days before the skills test, and a CLP is valid for no more than one year. First-time Class A or B applicants and some endorsement applicants must also complete Entry-Level Driver Training (ELDT) with a registered provider.
A study plan to clear 80%
- Start with General Knowledge, 10 questions at a time, and read every explanation you miss.
- Practice only your missed questions until you get each right twice in a row.
- When a topic stays above 80%, take a full mock test.
- Move on to the endorsement topics you need.
