How to do reality checks for lucid dreaming (with MILD and WBTB)
A reality check is a quick daytime habit of asking "Am I dreaming right now?" and testing it. When the habit carries over into a dream, you may notice something odd and realize you are dreaming — a lucid dream. Results vary from person to person, but the method itself is simple.
Four reality checks
- Look at your hands: check your palm and count your fingers. In dreams, hands often look wrong.
- Pinch your nose and breathe: in a dream you may still be able to breathe through it.
- Read text twice: read something, look away, read it again. Dream text tends to change.
- Check a clock twice: if the time jumps or makes no sense, you may be dreaming.
How many a day, and when
A common approach is 3 to 5 checks spread across your waking hours. What matters more than the count is asking the question seriously each time. Doing a check whenever you meet one of your dream signs — the places or situations that keep showing up in your dream journal — makes the habit stick.
MILD and WBTB
MILD (Mnemonic Induction of Lucid Dreams): as you fall asleep, repeat a sentence like "Next time I'm dreaming, I'll notice I'm dreaming" and picture yourself back in a recent dream, realizing it is a dream.
WBTB (Wake Back to Bed): wake up briefly earlier than usual, then go back to sleep, usually combined with MILD. If you are short on sleep or struggle to fall back asleep, skip it.
How Dreamfold helps
In Dreamfold's Lucid tab, turn on Reality checks and choose how many a day plus a start and end time; reminders arrive at random times in that window with "Am I dreaming right now? Look at your hands." An evening reminder shows your own MILD intention. Mark lucid dreams when you write them, and Stats shows your lucid dream rate and dream signs. Short in-app guides cover reality checks, MILD and WBTB.
