How to use a home screen habit widget on Android
Short answer: long-press an empty spot on your home screen, open Widgets, find your habit app and drag the size you want onto the screen. After that, tapping a habit on the widget checks it off for today without opening the app. Since the app-opening step is the main reason habits get missed, one widget changes your completion rate more than any feature inside the app.
Why the widget is the whole point
A widget is the single most requested feature in habit tracker reviews. "I keep forgetting because I have to open the app to check things off" and "it would be perfect if it just had a widget" show up even in five-star reviews.
The reason is simple. The habit itself takes a second, but unlock → find app → open → tap means four extra steps, and those four steps have to become a habit of their own. A widget collapses them into one tap.
There's also visibility. You look at your home screen dozens of times a day. An empty square sitting there reminds you without any notification at all.
Adding the widget, step by step
The wording differs slightly by phone and launcher, but the steps are the same.
- Install the app and open it once to add at least one habit. Widgets need something to display before they list properly.
- Long-press an empty area of your home screen.
- Tap Widgets in the bar that appears.
- Find the app in the list, expand it, then long-press the size you want and drag it onto the home screen.
- Drag the edges to resize. A small wide widget is enough for three habits or fewer; use a large one for five or more.
- Tap a habit on the widget once to confirm it checks off and the square fills immediately.
When the widget is missing or won't refresh
If the app isn't in the widget list, you probably haven't opened it since installing, or the home screen page is full. Open the app once, free up space or add a page, and try again.
If a check doesn't show up on the widget, battery optimization may be restricting background updates. Go to Settings → Battery → app battery usage and set the app to Unrestricted.
Moving an app to an SD card or external storage removes its widgets on some phones. Keep it on internal storage.
If yesterday's checks are still showing after midnight, remove the widget and add it again to force a refresh.
How Dayfill does it
The Dayfill widget shows only the habits due today, and tapping one checks it off in place without launching the app. The filled square appears in the monthly and yearly grid right away, and habits set to repeat on certain days only appear on those days. There's no account, so the widget never sits empty waiting for a login.
