Why habit reminders don't arrive on Android, and how to fix it

Short answer: there are usually three causes. Notification permission is off, battery optimization has put the app to sleep, or the app only has one global reminder time that doesn't match when you actually want the nudge. Work through the checklist below and you'll almost always find it.

Missing reminders are the second reason habit apps get deleted

Across low-star reviews of subscription habit and routine apps, "notifications don't arrive" is the most common complaint after forced payment. No reminder means a broken streak, and a broken streak means no reason to open the app again.

The other frequent complaint is a single app-wide reminder: one 9am alarm can't cover an evening habit, so the reminder becomes noise and people turn it off entirely.

Work through this in order

Start at the top; most cases are solved within the first three steps.

  • Notification permission: Settings → Apps → the app → Notifications, and make sure notifications are allowed along with the specific category. On Android 13 and later, declining the prompt at install means nothing will ever arrive.
  • Battery optimization: Settings → Battery → app battery usage, and set the app to Unrestricted. If your phone keeps a separate sleeping-apps list, remove it there too.
  • Exact alarms: Settings → Apps → Special app access → Alarms & reminders, and allow the app. Without it, reminders can drift by minutes or longer.
  • Do Not Disturb and Bedtime mode: check that your reminder times don't fall inside a DND window, or add the app as an exception.
  • Per-habit times: confirm inside the app that each habit actually has a reminder time set. A global toggle with empty per-habit times won't fire when you expect.
  • After a reboot: some phones need scheduled alarms re-registered. Restart and confirm the next reminder still arrives.

Don't rely on notifications alone

A reminder is a helper, not the system. Notifications disappear once dismissed, but an empty square on a home screen widget stays visible all day.

Plenty of people turn reminders off entirely and use only the widget. If notifications stress you out, a widget plus a weekly look at your grid lasts longer.

How Dayfill does it

Dayfill sets a reminder time on each habit separately: stretching at 7:00, vitamins at 12:30, journaling at 23:00. With day-of-week repeats on, the reminder only fires on those days. The notification permission can be skipped during onboarding, and declining it leaves the widget and all tracking working exactly the same.
