How to show your next class on your home screen with a widget
A next class widget is a small panel on your phone's home screen that tells you what your next class is, how many minutes until it starts and which room it's in, without opening an app. No more opening your timetable between classes to find today's column. On Android it takes about a minute to add from the home screen.
Why a next class widget beats a full-week widget
A widget that shows the whole week shrinks the text until it's hard to read, and you still have to find today's column. Between classes you only need three things, the class, the time and the room, so a widget that shows just those is the fastest to read.
How to add a widget on Android
Menu names vary a little by phone, but the steps are the same.
- 1. Touch and hold an empty spot on your home screen
- 2. Tap Widgets
- 3. Find your timetable app (Classtile) in the list
- 4. Touch and hold the Next class widget and drop it where you want
- 5. Tap the widget to check it opens the app's Today view
Make sure it shows the right class
If the widget shows the wrong class, the timetable settings are usually the cause. Check that class times match your real schedule down to the 5 minutes, that the week start day and visible days are right, and, for alternating schedules, that the A/B reference week is correct. Aggressive battery saving can delay widget updates, so consider excluding your timetable app from battery optimization.
Reminders that pair well with a widget
A morning summary of how many classes you have and when the first one starts, plus an evening heads-up about tomorrow's first class, covers the start of the day and the night before. Turn on only the ones you actually want.
In Classtile
Classtile's next class widget shows the subject, how long until it starts and the room on your home screen, and tapping it opens the Today tab. It follows the app's week start, visible days and A/B week settings, so if you start the week on Sunday, the widget does too. In Settings you can optionally turn on a morning summary of today's classes and an evening heads-up for tomorrow.
