How to Open PDF Files on Android: Every Method Explained

Unlike iPhone, Android doesn't ship with one obvious answer for opening PDFs. That's why tapping a PDF sometimes does nothing, opens a different app every time, or greets you with an ad. Here is how to open PDFs in each situation — and how to clean up your default app.

Method 1: From the Files app

Downloaded PDFs usually live in the Download folder. Open your device's Files app (such as Files by Google), browse to Documents or Download, and tap the PDF — a list of apps that can open it appears.

If no app shows up, you don't have a PDF viewer installed. Some devices ship without one and show 'No app can open this file'. Installing a viewer app fixes it.

Method 2: Straight from email or messenger attachments

For PDFs received in Gmail, WhatsApp, Slack and the like, tapping the attachment brings up an 'Open with' chooser. Pick a viewer and the download-and-open happens in one step.

If the chooser appearing every time annoys you, tap 'Always' instead of 'Just once' when picking the app. Every PDF opens directly in that app from then on.

Changing your default PDF app

If another app is already set as the default, reset it in Settings → Apps → the current default app → 'Open by default' → 'Clear defaults'. The next time you open a PDF, the app chooser appears again.

Note that tapping a PDF link in a browser often opens the browser's built-in preview, not an app. Saving the file and opening it in a real viewer is far better for zooming, searching and resuming.
