Zone cleaning schedule: one area of your home each week

Zone cleaning splits your home into a few areas and focuses on one area each week. Your daily routine keeps the basics in check, and the zone takes care of the spots you usually skip, like the stovetop, under the bed or the washer seal. With five zones, the whole house gets a turn every five weeks.

Why split your home into zones

"Clean the house" is too big to start. "This week, the bathroom" is not. A set zone removes the daily decision about what to clean, and 15 minutes a day across a week is plenty.

Five zones, week by week

You don't have to finish every task. Whatever is left comes round again next time.

WeekZoneExample tasks
Week 1Kitchen & diningWipe counters and backsplash, clean the stovetop, clear old food from the fridge, wipe the table
Week 2Entry & livingLine up shoes, wipe the door handle, dust shelves, vacuum the sofa and floor
Week 3Bathrooms & laundryScrub the toilet, clean the shower, wipe the mirror, clean the washer seal and lint filter
Week 4BedroomsChange the sheets, dust nightstands, vacuum under the bed, declutter one drawer
Week 5Extra spacesClear the desk, sweep the balcony, put tools back, take out recycling

Make it fit your home

The most common complaint about zone cleaning apps is that you can't adjust the zones to your own home. Zones only stick when they match the home you actually live in.

  • 1. Remove rooms you don't have
  • 2. Two bathrooms? Add both
  • 3. Group a balcony, garage or office under extra spaces
  • 4. Rename zones to whatever you call them
  • 5. Swap the order if a zone needs attention this week

In Zestday

Pick the rooms you have and Zestday fills in five zones and highlights this week's zone automatically. You can open any other zone at any time and edit every room, task and zone name, with nothing locked. Today's mission picks one small task from this week's zone for you.

FAQ

How many zones should I use?
Usually four or five, so the whole house comes round about once a month.
What if I don't finish this week's zone?
Move on to the next one anyway. Your daily routine keeps the basics covered, so a few missed tasks are fine.
What if a different zone is the messy one?
Open that zone and do what it needs. The weekly order is a guide, not a restriction.
Does zone cleaning work in a studio apartment?
Yes. Split by area instead of room: kitchen, bathroom, bed area and entry.
