How to do the 100 envelope challenge (amounts and a realistic timeline)
In the 100 envelope challenge you number envelopes 1 to 100, pick one, and put that many dollars in it. There is no order — you choose the envelope that fits your week. Fill them all and you have 1 + 2 + … + 100 = $5,050.
Total and timeline
Each envelope holds its number times your unit. How long it takes depends on how many envelopes you fill per week.
| Unit | Total | 2 a week | 7 a week (daily) |
|---|---|---|---|
| $1 | $5,050 | about 50 weeks | about 15 weeks |
| $0.50 | $2,525 | about 50 weeks | about 15 weeks |
| $2 | $10,100 | about 50 weeks | about 15 weeks |
How to pick envelopes
- Right after payday, pick a high number (70–100). Clear the heavy envelopes while you have the money.
- In a tight week, pick a low number. One small envelope keeps the streak alive.
- Alternate high and low so you are not left with only big envelopes at the end.
- With paper envelopes, keep a list of the ones left — once they get mixed up it is hard to tell which are empty.
