Just Moved? How to Figure Out Your New Trash Schedule
After a move there's plenty to handle — address changes, internet, utilities — but the first real problem is usually trash. Moving week produces a mountain of boxes and packaging, and you don't yet know the collection days or the local rules. Here is the fastest way to figure them out.
1. Find the collection days — three places to check
Collection days can differ street by street. Check in this order:
- Your city or district website's waste page — most publish day tables by area
- Building management, if you're in an apartment — buildings often run their own recycling days
- Street signage near collection points, or watch what neighbors put out and when
2. Learn the local bag and payment rules
Many cities require designated trash bags or stickers sold locally — bags from your old area often aren't valid. Buy the new area's bags at nearby convenience stores or supermarkets.
Check whether food waste uses its own bags, bins, or a pay-by-weight system.
3. Moving boxes and bulky items are separate
Flatten boxes, remove tape and shipping labels, and put them out on recycling day — split large amounts over a few pickups.
Furniture and appliances usually need a bulky-waste pickup: report it on the city website or app, pay the fee, and put the item at the designated spot.
4. Worth checking in week one
Beyond the days themselves, note these once and save future headaches.
- The time window — often 'after sunset the day before until early morning'
- The location — curbside at your door, or a shared collection point
- Food-waste method — dedicated bags, bins, or weighing machines
- Special recycling days — some areas collect plastic film or styrofoam on separate days
5. Now make sure you never forget it
The final step: register the new rules in the Trash Day app — 'Trash — Mon/Thu', 'Recycling — Wed' — and get reminded the evening before and the morning of. Reminders survive reboots.
Weekly, nth-week, biweekly, and monthly cycles are all supported, so any local rule fits. Fully offline, no account — five minutes on moving day and you're set.
