How much does skipping coffee save? A week, month and year table

One coffee a day looks small, but over a year it adds up. That's the latte factor. Skip a $5.50 coffee five times a week and you save $27.50 a week, $115.50 a month and $1,430 a year. Find your price and habit in the table below.

The formula

Savings = price × ⌊days × times per week ÷ 7⌋. A week is 7 days, a month is 30 days and a year is 365 days, and the number of skips is rounded down to a whole number. Five times a week is ⌊30 × 5 ÷ 7⌋ = 21 skips a month and ⌊365 × 5 ÷ 7⌋ = 260 skips a year.

Latte factor table by price and times per week

Even skipping twice a week adds up to several hundred dollars a year.

Price × times/week1 week1 month (30 days)1 year (365 days)
$4.00 × 2/week$8$32$416
$4.00 × 5/week$20$84$1,040
$5.50 × 2/week$11$44$572
$5.50 × 3/week$16.50$66$858
$5.50 × 5/week$27.50$115.50$1,430
$5.50 × 7/week$38.50$165$2,007.50
$7.00 × 3/week$21$84$1,092
$7.00 × 5/week$35$147$1,820

Skip a $7 coffee five times a week and that's $1,820 a year, about the cost of a short trip abroad.

Why the math alone doesn't save money

Not buying a coffee doesn't put $5.50 into savings by itself. Money left in checking tends to vanish into the next purchase. The numbers in the table only become a real balance when you move what you skipped into a savings account.

  • 1. Log the amount every time you skip
  • 2. Once a week, transfer the total to your savings account
  • 3. Count only the money you moved toward your goal

In Skipstack
