How to improve English listening with repetition: short, slow, three times, out loud
Most learners can't follow spoken English not because they don't know the words, but because the sounds link and shrink — "What do you" comes out like "whaddaya". Instead of letting long videos play in the background, hearing one short phrase at different speeds and saying it back opens your ears much faster.
Why repetition works
When you hear the same phrase several times, what first sounded like a blur starts separating into words. The shorter the phrase, the sooner that happens.
Saying the phrase yourself helps too: sounds you can produce are easier to catch. You don't need separate listening and speaking practice.
A one-phrase repetition routine
One or two minutes per phrase is enough.
- Listen once at normal speed and say what you heard.
- Listen slowly and notice which sounds link together or fade.
- Play it three times at normal speed and shadow it — speak right behind the audio.
- Say it once without looking. If you get stuck, go back to step 2.
Linked sounds that trip people up
These phrases sound very different from how they're written. Compare them at slow speed.
| Phrase | What it sounds like | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| What do you want? | whaddaya want | Asking what someone wants |
| Can I get this to go? | canai get this t'go | Takeaway order |
| Let me check. | lemme check | I'll look it up |
| Could you say that again? | couldja say that again | Asking someone to repeat |
Common mistakes
Leaving long content on in the background feels familiar, but it doesn't make you able to say the phrases.
Relying on subtitles from the start trains your eyes, not your ears. Listen first, and look at the text only when you're stuck.
