1. When you need this instead of measuring a ring

The most common case is a surprise proposal — sneaking a ring off someone's finger to measure it is usually impossible and easy to get caught doing. Preparing couple rings, or a ring as a gift for family or a friend, often runs into the same problem: there's no ring to measure yet.

In these cases, instead of measuring a ring, you measure the width of the finger the ring will go on and estimate the size from that.

2. Screen calibration still matters

For finger measuring to be accurate, the on-screen lines still need to represent real-world length correctly, so calibrate your screen once with an ID-1 sized card (a bank card or ID, 85.6 × 53.98mm) — the same one-time step used for ring measuring. Once calibrated, it applies to both ring and finger measuring.

3. How to measure the finger's width

Measuring the actual finger, or as close to the real situation as possible, gives the most reliable result.

Find where the ring will actually sit — usually just below the knuckle of the ring finger
Place the finger between the two on-screen lines and drag them to match either edge of the finger's width
Measure at a normal time of day, when the finger isn't swollen from heat or the evening
If the person already wears another ring, even on a different finger, use its size as a reference too

4. Practical tips for measuring in secret

While they're asleep, or during a natural moment like holding hands, wrap a piece of string or a paper strip around the base of the finger, mark where it overlaps, and measure that length with a ruler afterward. Then match the on-screen lines in Ringmate's finger-measuring mode to that same width to get the size.

Finger measurement can carry more error than measuring an actual ring, so after the proposal, it's worth confirming the size again with the real ring before finalizing an order.
