How to Find Hidden Files on Android: What Your Gallery Won't Show You

The rules for what counts as "hidden" on Android are simple:

• Names starting with a dot: files and folders like .thumbnails or .cache are treated as hidden by Linux convention, so file managers and galleries skip them.
• A .nomedia file: if a folder contains an empty file named .nomedia, Android's media scanner skips the entire folder. Every photo and video inside disappears from your gallery at once.

.thumbnails — where copies of deleted photos survive

To display lists quickly, gallery apps generate a thumbnail for every photo and store it in hidden folders like DCIM/.thumbnails. Deleting the original often leaves the thumbnail behind — which is why traces or copies of deleted photos frequently turn up there. Messaging and photo-editing apps keep their own hidden folders with originals and sent copies too.

Why do perfectly fine photos vanish from the gallery?

Sometimes a photo disappears from the gallery after you move it to another folder. Either the destination folder contained a .nomedia file, or the media scanner failed to re-index the new location. The file is still on storage — it's just missing from the gallery's database. That's an "unindexed" file.

How to actually find hidden files

You can enable "show hidden files" in a file manager's settings to reveal dot-folders. But you'd have to open hundreds of folders one by one to see what's inside — not practical.
