How is this different from my camera's zoom?

The camera app is built for taking photos: focus keeps wandering after you tap, and you can't freeze, filter and light in one screen. Loupe is built for reading — it locks focus where you tap, lets you zoom into a frozen frame, and boosts contrast with inverted colors. The hardware zoom limit is the same; how readable the text is, isn't.

Where do saved images go?

Both to your gallery (Pictures/Loupe) and to the in-app Library. Gallery images stay even if you uninstall the app.

Does it need internet?

No. The magnifier works fully offline and the camera image is never sent anywhere. Internet is used only to show ads.

Yes, it's free with ads. Ads appear only in a separate strip below the camera view and never cover the preview.

What about the reminders?

Reminders are off by default. If you turn them on, you get at most two short tips a day (morning and evening). On days you used the app, the evening reminder is skipped. Time, sound, vibration and do-not-disturb hours are all adjustable.

Magnifier app vs. camera zoom: what's actually different?

Read the reviews of any magnifier app and one complaint dominates: 'It's the same as the camera zoom.' That's half right. Here's exactly where it's the same and where it isn't — without exaggeration.

The same: maximum zoom

A magnifier app uses your phone's camera, so the physical zoom limit is identical to the camera app. Any app advertising '100× magnification' is stretching pixels digitally into mush.

That's why Loupe's badge only ever shows the camera's real ratio (e.g. 3.5×). We don't compete on zoom.

Different #1: focus is tuned for reading

The camera app exists to take photos. Tap to focus and a moment later autofocus drifts again. Everyone knows the feeling of focus wandering while you're mid-sentence.

A magnifier app locks focus where you tapped and leaves it there. Focus that doesn't move while you read — that's the biggest difference.

Different #2: the frozen frame

Hand-held zoom amplifies every tremor by the zoom factor. In the camera app the fix is three steps: shoot → open gallery → pinch.

Freeze in a magnifier app collapses that into one button. Zoom into the frozen frame right there, and save it on the spot if you need it.

Different #3: contrast and light

For aging eyes, contrast matters as much as size. Inverted (white on black), high-contrast and yellow-on-black filters don't exist in the camera app, and they've been proven in low-vision aids for decades.

The camera app's flash is a burst for the shot; keeping it on is awkward. A magnifier's light stays on the whole time you're looking.

Different #4: time to get there

When you need to read something now without your glasses, the time it takes to open the camera and adjust zoom is enough to go find your glasses. A magnifier app opens from a home-screen widget or Quick Settings tile in one tap, and remembers your last zoom and filter.

So, the verdict

If you want it bigger, there's no difference. If you want it more readable, there is: locked focus, freeze, contrast filters, one-tap entry. Those four are the reason to use a magnifier app, and Loupe focuses on exactly those four.

Conversely, a magnifier app whose ads cover the camera view or that can't save what you froze is worse than the camera zoom. Check reviews for those two things first.
