Can I keep it off my lock screen?

Hanjaro never shows up on your lock screen in the first place. It has no lock screen feature and doesn't ask for the 'display over other apps' permission. You study only when you open the app or look at the widget.

Which grades are included?

Grades 8 to 4 of the Korean Hanja Proficiency Test, 1,000 characters in total: 50 for grade 8, 100 for grade 7, 150 for grade 6, 200 for grade 5 and 500 for grade 4.

Yes. Hanjaro is free to download and supported by ads. Nothing is locked behind a payment, so every grade and feature is available.

Isn't that a lot to memorize at once?

You choose the set size: 5, 10 or 20 characters. The default is 10.

Where do the readings come from?

Readings, stroke counts and radicals are based on the Unicode Unihan database.

Can I use it to prepare for the Hanja test?

The characters are organized by the test's grade lists, so you can work through them in order up to your target grade. Check the test organizer for dates and registration.

Can I review only the ones I got wrong?

Yes. Missed characters collect in your wrong-answer notes and drop off once you get them right.

Do I need an account?

No. There's no sign-up, and your study history stays on your phone.

How to stop a Hanja app from taking over your lock screen

Short answer: a Hanja screen that pops up every time you turn on your phone usually comes from the app's 'Display over other apps' permission. Turn it off in Settings > Apps > Special app access > Display over other apps. If you still want to study, move it to a home screen widget instead.

What is 'Display over other apps'?

'Display over other apps' is a special Android permission that lets an app draw its screen on top of others. Lock screen study apps use it to appear whenever you turn on your phone.

1. Turn the permission off

Menu names vary slightly by device and Android version.

Open Settings > Apps
Tap Special app access
Tap Display over other apps
Find the Hanja app and switch it off

2. Check the app's own settings

Some apps have their own lock screen study toggle. If it still shows up after you remove the permission, check the app's settings and its notification settings too.

3. Alternative: study with a widget

Lock screen study feels heavy because it blocks your phone even when you don't want it. A home screen widget is there when you look at it and never gets in the way of unlocking.
