How to learn the 50 grade 8 Hanja efficiently

What are grade 8 Hanja?

Grade 8 Hanja are the 50 characters assigned to the lowest grade of Korea's Hanja Proficiency Test. They're the first set most learners memorize.

1. Split 50 into five sets of 10

Big chunks wear you out. Ten characters is a set you can finish in one short session, and one set a day already shows clear progress. If 10 feels like too many, drop to 5.

2. Learn meaning, reading and example words together

A character sticks better when you see its meaning, its reading and a word that uses it. Radical and stroke count help you tell look-alike characters apart.

• Look at the character and try to recall the meaning and reading
• Hide the meaning and check yourself again
• Read the example words to see how it's used

3. Quiz yourself after every set

Flipping through cards makes everything feel familiar. A quiz right after the set, in both directions (character → meaning/reading and back), shows what you actually know.

4. Repeat only what you missed

There's no need to re-study characters you already know. Keep a list of misses, retry them, and remove each one once you get it right.
