How to actually follow the 20-20-20 rule during screen work
The 20-20-20 rule is a widely shared eye break habit for screen work: every 20 minutes, look at something about 20 feet (6 metres) away for 20 seconds. The rule is simple. Following it is the hard part — 20 minutes disappears when you're focused, you look up and don't know where to look, and 20 seconds feels longer than expected. Here's how to fit it into a real workday.
The rule in one table
What each of the three numbers means, and how to make it practical.
| Number | Meaning | Practical tip |
|---|---|---|
| 20 minutes | How often, while you're at a screen | Don't count — let a reminder do it |
| 20 feet (about 6 m) | How far to look | One spot you choose in advance: a window, the end of a hallway |
| 20 seconds | How long to look | Blink slowly and let your eyes soften |
Five ways to make it stick
Changing your setup works better than relying on willpower.
- Pick your far point in advance — a building outside the window or a clock on the far wall, something you can see just by lifting your head. No window? The farthest point in the room is fine.
- Remind yourself only during work hours — reminders that go off in the evening or at weekends get switched off fast.
- Act on the reminder right away — "after this email" usually means never. It's only 20 seconds; look up right there.
- Blink slowly during the 20 seconds — while you look into the distance, close your eyes fully and open them slowly a few times.
- Attach it to habits you already have — look far away at the end of every video call or every time you pick up the phone.
When 20 seconds isn't enough
20-20-20 is a short pause. When you have a little more time, at lunch or mid-afternoon, try a short eye exercise routine that slowly moves your gaze and shifts your focus, with a moment of rest with your eyes closed. The "Simple eye exercises for tired eyes" guide walks through one step by step.
