3 ways to hide files on Android (and keep them out of the gallery)
Lending your phone for a minute, showing someone a photo — everyone has files they'd rather keep private. Here are the three common ways to hide files on Android, and when each one makes sense.
Method 1: Dot-prefixed hidden files
Android treats any file or folder starting with a dot (.) as hidden. Rename a file with a leading dot and it disappears from the gallery and normal lists.
It's simple — but anyone can flip on "show hidden files" and see everything. Think of it as tidying, not security.
Method 2: A .nomedia folder
Place an empty file named .nomedia inside a folder and the media scanner skips it — its photos and videos vanish from the gallery. A classic trick for hiding a whole folder.
But open the folder in any file manager and everything is right there. Again: organization, not protection.
Method 3: A PIN-locked safe folder (recommended)
For files that truly must stay private, move them into a locked space. A safe folder opens only with a PIN, and its files move into a hidden area invisible to the gallery and other apps.
