Android storage full? 5 safe ways to free up space

When the "storage almost full" warning appears, most people start deleting photos. But your phone is full of files you can delete without losing anything. Here's the safe order to clean.

1. Start with temp files and logs

Apps quietly pile up .tmp, .log and .bak files. They're by-products, not your data — deleting them changes nothing.

You can hunt them by extension, or let Folda's storage cleaner collect them automatically with a reason shown for every item.

2. Remove duplicate copies, keep originals

Saving the same photo twice or re-downloading a file leaves identical copies around. Only one needs to stay.

The key is keeping the original. Folda automatically preserves the oldest file in each duplicate group and only lists the copies.

3. Thumbnail caches are not your photos

Gallery apps keep shrunken preview images in .thumbnails folders — often hundreds of MB. They're cache, not originals. Delete them and your photos remain untouched; the gallery rebuilds them if needed.

4. Sort large files by size

Most storage is eaten by a handful of big files. Sort files over 50MB by size and you'll find forgotten videos and leftover APK installers.

APK files can be deleted after installation — the app stays.

5. Always review before deleting

One-tap auto cleaners feel convenient, but not knowing what was deleted is the real risk. A recording or document deleted by mistake can't come back.

The safe pattern: see what and why, select yourself, and delete through a trash bin so you have 30 days to undo mistakes.

  • Safe to delete: temp files, logs, thumbnail caches, duplicate copies, installed APKs
  • Review first: large videos, old downloads
  • Never delete blindly: DCIM photos, recordings, documents
