How often to check a child's temperature at night — and how not to miss it

The hardest part of a fever night is exhaustion. There's no single right interval — it depends on your child's age, how they seem, and what your doctor told you — but a few principles and an alert you can trust make the night much easier.

How your child looks matters more than the number

How your child is acting often tells you more than a single reading. Many doctors advise that a child who is sleeping comfortably and breathing easily doesn't need to be woken just for a temperature check. If they seem limp, are breathing fast or with effort, or just seem very different from usual, don't wait for the next check — assess and get medical help.

Good moments to re-check

Without a specific interval from your doctor, these are useful times to measure and log.

  • Just before giving fever medicine (so the pre-dose reading is recorded)
  • When checking whether the medicine is working (see the label or your doctor)
  • When your child wakes on their own or feels hot
  • At any interval your doctor specifically gave you

Set up alerts you won't sleep through

"Alarms stopped ringing after the update" and "it rang again even though I'd just measured" are common complaints about fever apps. On Android, reliable alerts may need both notification permission and "Alarms & reminders"; also check Do Not Disturb.

Feverly reminds you to re-check while there is a fever (30 min to 4 h, or off), and if you measure early the reminder moves back by itself. With "Alarms & reminders" allowed it rings at the exact time, and it also tells you when a medicine gap has passed.

Log it fast, half asleep

Night logging should take seconds. In Feverly, typing 3-8-6 gives 38.6; you can reuse the last reading, nudge ±0.1, or log "15 min ago". The home-screen widget's "Log temperature" skips opening the app.

Important

This is general information, not medical advice. Follow the product label and your child's doctor or pharmacist for which medicine to use, how much, and how often. Feverly is a record-keeping tool, not a medical device, and it never calculates doses.

If your child has a seizure, trouble breathing, a very high fever, is very drowsy or hard to wake, or is a baby under 3 months with any fever, contact a doctor or emergency services right away.
