How to make a weekly and monthly cleaning checklist by room
Build a cleaning checklist by splitting it into rooms and giving each task a daily, weekly or monthly frequency. Instead of one exhausting deep clean, you do the few tasks that are due today, and the house stays clean.
Four steps to a cleaning checklist
- List the rooms in your home (kitchen, bathroom, bedroom, living room, entry).
- Write 3 to 6 tasks for each room.
- Give each task a frequency: daily, weekly, every 2 weeks, monthly or quarterly.
- Spread tasks across the week so no day takes more than 15 to 20 minutes.
Cleaning frequency by room
A typical household. Shorten the intervals if you have pets or kids.
| Room | Daily | Weekly | Monthly |
|---|---|---|---|
| Kitchen | Dishes, wipe counters | Clean stove and sink, take out trash | Clean out fridge, range hood filter |
| Bathroom | Wipe the sink | Toilet and shower, change towels | Drains and grout |
| Bedroom | Make the bed | Wash bedding, vacuum | Flip mattress, sort closet |
| Living room | Put things away | Vacuum and mop, dust | Wash curtains and couch covers |
