How to make pour over coffee step by step with a timer

Pour over coffee comes out the same every time once you fix when to pour and how many grams to pour to. Start with 18 g of coffee, 288 g of water (1:16), water at 93–96 °C and a medium-fine grind: bloom for 40 seconds, pour in three parts, and finish around 3:10.

What you need

A dripper such as a V60 and a filter, a server or mug, a gooseneck kettle, a scale that reads in 0.1–1 g steps, a timer and a grinder. Rinse the filter with hot water to remove any paper taste and discard that water. Put the server and dripper on the scale, add the coffee and tare to zero.

Targets are the cumulative weight on your scale. Reach each target within the step's time, then wait for the next step.

TimeStepScale target (cumulative)
0:00 – 0:40Bloom: wet all the grounds and wait43 g
0:40 – 1:05First pour, circling from the center outward144 g
1:05 – 1:30Second pour216 g
1:30 – 1:55Third pour288 g
1:55 – 2:00Swirl the dripper gently to level the bed288 g
2:00 – 3:10Let it drain completely-

If it is still draining after 3:30, grind coarser next time; if it finishes before 2:30, grind finer.

Pouring tips

Keep a thin, steady stream and avoid pouring straight onto the filter walls. Hitting each target weight matters more than hitting the exact second. If the water has not drained when the next pour is due, it is fine to wait a moment, but keep the total time running so you can compare brews.

With other brewers

For a Chemex, keep the ratio and grind slightly coarser. For a French press, use a coarse grind, add all the water at once, wait about 4 minutes and press. The AeroPress and the Clever dripper steep and then drain, so steep time matters more than the number of pours. Whatever the brewer, the order stays the same: grams of coffee, grams of water, then time and target for each step.

In Bloomcup

Bloomcup walks you through steps like these with a big timer. The screen shows the seconds left, the target weight for your scale, the instruction and the next step, and it beeps and buzzes when it is time for the next pour. Go back or skip a step at any time; pausing a step keeps the total time running. The screen stays on and there are no ads while you brew.
