How long have we been together? Count days, months and years
To find how long you have been together, count the days from the day you started dating to today. Then decide one thing: whether that first day is day 1 or day 0. That single choice is why two apps, or two people, can be one day apart.
Step 1: count the days
A date calculator or a love days counter does this for you, including leap years.
- 1. Write down your start date, the day you started dating.
- 2. Count the days between that date and today.
- 3. If you count the first day as day 1, add one. If you count it as day 0, keep the number as it is.
Day 1 vs day 0, with an example
Say you started dating on January 1, 2026. On April 10, 2026, 99 days have passed.
A review of one couple app puts it plainly: "28th Sept => 19 Oct = 22 days according to the app." The app was counting the first day as day 1. Knowing the rule removes the surprise.
| Counting rule | April 10 is | Day 100 is |
|---|---|---|
| First day = day 1 | Day 100 | April 10, 2026 |
| First day = day 0 (days passed) | Day 99 | April 11, 2026 |
Step 2: turn days into months and years
Months are counted on the calendar, not as 30 days. From January 1 to February 1 is one month, and from January 1, 2026 to January 1, 2027 is one year.
| Shown as | 412 days from January 1, 2026 |
|---|---|
| Years, months, days | 1 year, 1 month, 16 days |
| Weeks | 58 weeks, 6 days |
| Hours | 9,888 hours (days × 24) |
Step 3: keep it from drifting
Use the same counting rule everywhere: your counter, your widget and your anniversary list.
If you started on the 29th, 30th or 31st, monthly anniversaries in short months fall on the last day of that month.
A counter that only changes when you open it can look stuck. Pick one that updates on its own at midnight.
Doing it in Belovy
In Belovy, you pick your start date once and choose whether the first day is day 1 or day 0. The home screen then shows "412 days together" with years-months-days, weeks and hours, and the next anniversary with a D-day countdown. The home screen widget and the status bar count show the same number and update every midnight.
FAQ
- Why does my counter say 22 days when I count 21?
- One method counts the first day as day 1, the other as day 0. From September 28 to October 19 is 21 days apart; if the first day counts as day 1, October 19 is day 22. Neither is wrong, just pick one and stick with it.
- How many months have we been together?
- Count calendar months from your start date: from March 14 to the next month's 14th is one month. If you started on the 29th, 30th or 31st, short months end on their last day.
- Is there an app that shows how long we've been together?
- Belovy counts from the day you started dating and shows days, years-months-days, weeks and hours, with a widget and a status bar count. You choose day 1 or day 0.
