Why your couple D-day widget or status bar count isn't updating

A love days counter usually gets stuck because Android stops the app from running its midnight update in the background, or because its notification was turned off or swiped away. The fixes below take a minute and work on most Android phones.

The symptom

Users describe it the same way: the number in the status bar or on the widget stays on yesterday until they open the app. One wrote that because the count did not update without opening the app, they missed their 700th day. A D-day counter should go up on its own.

Five fixes

  • 1. Allow notifications. On Android 13 and later, a status bar count is a notification. Go to Settings > Apps > your counter app > Notifications and turn them on.
  • 2. Turn off battery optimization for the app. Settings > Apps > the app > Battery, then choose Unrestricted (the wording varies by phone maker). Battery savers often delay or skip midnight updates.
  • 3. Don't swipe the status bar count away. On Android 14 and later, ongoing notifications can be dismissed. If it disappeared, open the app once to bring it back.
  • 4. Remove and re-add the widget. After an app update or a launcher change, a widget can keep showing an old picture. Long-press it, remove it, then add it again from the widget list.
  • 5. Check the date settings. If the count is off by exactly one day, it is not stuck: the app counts the first day as day 0 and you expected day 1, or the other way around. Also make sure the phone's date and time zone are set automatically.

What a counter should do on its own

Schedule an update at midnight, not only when you open it.

Put the count back after a phone restart.

Show the same number in the app, on the widget and in the status bar.

How Belovy handles it

Belovy's status bar count is a quiet notification that updates every midnight and is posted again when you open the app or restart the phone. The home screen widget shows your days together and the next D-day and is refreshed at midnight. If your phone maker's battery saver is strict, fix 2 above is still worth doing.

FAQ

Why does my D-day only update when I open the app?
Android limits what apps can do in the background. If a counter has no scheduled midnight update, or the system blocks it to save battery, the number changes only when the app runs.
My status bar count disappeared. Why?
On Android 14 and later, users can swipe away most ongoing notifications, and turning off the app's notifications removes it too. Open the app to bring it back, and keep notifications on.
Does Belovy update the count by itself?
Yes. Belovy refreshes the status bar count at midnight and again when you open the app or restart your phone. The home screen widget is refreshed at midnight too.
