Yatzy vs Yacht: rule differences box by box
These five-dice games come in three main rule sets: Yacht with 12 boxes, popular in Korea and Japan; the American Classic with 13 boxes; and Scandinavian Yatzy with 15 boxes. All three share the ones-to-sixes upper section and a bonus for 63 or more there. They differ in the lower boxes and in how full houses and straights score, so agree on the rule set before the first roll.

Yacht (12 boxes)
Six upper boxes plus Choice, 4 of a kind, full house, small straight, large straight and Yacht. There is no 3 of a kind box, so it is the shortest game. 4 of a kind and full house score the sum of all five dice, so high numbers pay. Any four in a row is 15, five in a row is 30, a Yacht is 50, and the upper bonus is 35 for 63 or more.
Classic (13 boxes)
The lower section has 3 of a kind, 4 of a kind, full house, small and large straights, five of a kind and chance. Fixed scores (full house 25, small straight 30, large straight 40) make straights valuable. After scoring 50 for five of a kind, each extra one adds 100, which makes this the rule set with the biggest comebacks.
Scandinavian Yatzy (15 boxes)
Adds one pair and two pairs, and 3 and 4 of a kind count only the matching dice (6-6-6-2-1 as 3 of a kind is 18). Only exactly 1-2-3-4-5 counts as the small straight (15) and only 2-3-4-5-6 as the large straight (20). Full house is the sum of all dice. The upper bonus is 50, so the upper section matters more.
