How to Track Your Period Without an Account

Tracking your cycle is basic health care — "when was your last period?" is the first question at any clinic. Yet most period apps demand an email sign-up before you can log a single day, and ship your body data to their servers. It doesn't have to work that way: you can track your period entirely without an account.

Why period data is especially sensitive

Cycle data isn't just dates. It implies ovulation and fertile windows, pregnancy likelihood, symptoms, and intimacy — information with heavier consequences than almost any other app data if it leaks or gets shared with third parties.

Data on a server is data out of your hands. Policy changes, acquisitions, breaches, legal requests — once uploaded, it can end up used in ways you never agreed to and can't control.

No account means nowhere to leak from

The strongest protection is never sending the data anywhere. If an app has no account and no server, your log exists only on your phone. Even the company that made the app can't see it.

Petal is built on exactly this principle. There is no sign-up screen at all, and every record is stored 100% on your device. Deleting the app deletes the data — which is what full ownership looks like.

Getting started without an account

A local-storage period tracker is actually faster to start with.

  • Install the app and enter the start date of your last period — no email, no password.
  • When your period starts, log it with one tap. In Petal, it takes about 3 seconds.
  • Add symptoms and moods only when you feel like it. As logs accumulate, predictions tune themselves to your cycle.

What about backup? Backup you control

The one trade-off of local storage: lose the phone, lose the data. The answer isn't server sync — it's export you control.

Petal exports your entire history as a JSON file and imports it back anytime. Where that file lives is entirely your choice, and it's also how you move to a new phone.
