How to pass your permit test on the first try
In most states the permit knowledge test is a multiple-choice exam of roughly 20 to 50 questions, and you usually need around 80% to pass. The surest way to pass the first time: read your state's official handbook once, learn road signs by shape and color, then practice by topic and take full practice tests, retrying only what you miss. When you score 90% or more on practice tests consistently, you're ready.
What the test looks like
The number of questions and the passing score depend on your state. Many states set the passing mark around 80% (roughly 70% to 85%), and some score road sign questions separately. Check your state DMV's (or equivalent agency's) instructions before you go.
The topics are nearly the same everywhere: road signs and pavement markings, right-of-way and signals, lanes, turns and parking, safe driving (following distance, speed, bad weather), alcohol, drugs and the law, and handling emergencies.
A 2-week study plan
20 to 30 minutes a day is enough. What matters is understanding why each answer is right.
- Days 1–3: Skim your state's official driver handbook once and mark every section with a number in it
- Days 4–6: Learn road signs in groups by shape and color (octagon = stop, downward triangle = yield, diamond = warning)
- Days 7–10: Practice 10 questions at a time by topic, and read the explanation even when you get it right
- Days 11–13: Take full-length practice tests and retry only the questions you missed
- The day before: Review your missed questions and the numbers table below, then get some sleep
Numbers that show up on the test
Number questions are the ones people miss most. These values are used in many states, but yours may differ.
| Rule | Common value | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Following distance | At least 3 seconds | More in bad weather or at night |
| Signal before turning | At least 100 feet | Some states require more on highways |
| No parking near a fire hydrant | Within 15 feet | Varies by state |
| Dim your high beams | 500 ft of oncoming, 300 ft behind a car | Some states use 200 ft when following |
| Blood alcohol limit (21+) | 0.08% | Utah uses 0.05% |
| Blood alcohol limit (under 21) | Zero tolerance (0.00–0.02%) | Varies by state |
Test-day tips
Bring proof of identity and residency (and a parent's consent form if you're a minor). Required documents and appointments vary by state, so check ahead. A vision screening is usually part of the visit.
Read every question to the end and cross out the answers you know are wrong. Choices with words like "always" or "never" are often traps. When you're unsure, the safest action is usually the right answer.
