Is the 7-minute workout enough? How often to do it

The 7-minute workout became widely known through an article by Klika and Jordan in the American College of Sports Medicine's Health & Fitness Journal in 2013: 12 body-weight exercises, 30 seconds each, 10 seconds of rest between, done at high intensity. Because it's so short, the most common question is whether it's enough.

What the original article said

The idea is circuit training that needs no equipment, takes little time and is hard work. The moves use large muscle groups and alternate upper body, lower body and core, so you can keep going with short rests.

The authors stressed keeping the intensity high and suggested repeating the circuit two or three times when time allows. In other words, seven minutes is one lap, not the whole session.

How it compares with WHO guidelines

The World Health Organization (2020) recommends that adults get 150–300 minutes of moderate or 75–150 minutes of vigorous aerobic activity a week, plus muscle-strengthening on two or more days.

RoutineWeekly totalvs. 75 min vigorous
1 lap a day × 7 daysAbout 49 minShort of it
2 laps a day × 7 daysAbout 98 minWithin range
3 laps a day × 5 daysAbout 105 minWithin range

That assumes you work hard enough to be out of breath the whole time. Done at an easy pace it counts as moderate, and you'd need more time.

So is once a day pointless?

No. The WHO also says some physical activity is better than none. Seven minutes a day can cover the muscle-strengthening recommendation (two or more days a week), and with other activity like walking it moves you toward the aerobic target.

Above all, it's short enough to do every day. Build the habit with one lap a day, then move to two when it feels routine.

A realistic weekly plan

  • Weeks 1–2: one lap a day, at least five days a week
  • Weeks 3–4: two laps on three days, one lap on the others
  • After that: two or three laps a day, or one lap plus a 30-minute walk
  • On very sore days, switch to a lighter circuit like Gentle or rest

FAQ

Will the 7-minute workout help me lose weight?
Weight depends a lot on diet and your total activity. The 7-minute workout is one way to move more, but it can't promise weight loss on its own.
Can I do it every day?
If it feels manageable, yes. On days with heavy soreness, rest or switch to a lighter standing circuit.
Is morning or evening better?
Whenever you'll actually stick to it. A reminder at a set time makes it easier to keep going.
